DEMOCRAT DICK DURBIN OBJECTS TO TOUGHENING SENTENCES FOR CHILD PORN OFFENDERS

Durbin argued guidelines in Hawley’s bill ‘don’t reflect the reality of today’.

On Tuesday, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) objected to legislation proposed by Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) that would toughen penalties for child porn offenders.

Unveiled last week, Hawley’s proposal seeking a five-year mandatory minimum sentence for child pornographers comes as the Senate will soon vote on whether to confirm Ketanji Brown Jackson as Supreme Court Justice, timing which Durbin says is suspicious as Republicans have been highlighting Jackson’s history of issuing light sentences to child porn offenders.

Senator Dick Durbin is objecting to Senator @HawleyMO‘s legislation seeking to toughen sentences for child porn offenders:

“These guidelines…don’t reflect the reality of today…we now live in a world of internet and access to…thousands of images, if that is your decision.” pic.twitter.com/cWovwxPm52— Townhall.com (@townhallcom) April 5, 2022

“You have to ask yourself, ‘Why now?’” Durbin said during his objection. “Why does the junior senator from Missouri bring this bill to the floor of the United States Senate today?”

“I know why. He said as much,” Durbin continued. “This senator has suggested over the course of the last two weeks and hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee that somehow this judge … aspiring to the Supreme Court is out of the mainstream when it comes to sentencing in child pornography cases.”

Elsewhere during his objection, Durbin argued guidelines presented in Hawley’s bill “don’t reflect the reality of today…we now live in a world of internet and access to…thousands of images, if that is your decision.”

On Tuesday, Sen. Hawley noted the PROTECT Act of 2022 is important to introduce now because the problem is reaching crisis-level proportions.

“I’d just invite you to look any parent in America in the eye and tell them that the exploitation of children is a conspiracy theory.”

“I’d just invite you to look any parent in America in the eye and tell them that the exploitation of children is a conspiracy theory,” Hawley told opponents of his bill.

The Senate Judiciary Committee deadlocked on a vote Monday to confirm Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson.

The vote means the full Senate will soon vote on Jackson’s nomination without an official recommendation by the committee.
